20th Century Studios officially confirmed a sequel to ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.’
The news came directly from Steve Asbell, the President of the 20th Century division at Disney. Asbell talked about the studio’s future plans with The Hollywood Reporter, saying there will be an even balance between franchise films and original stories. Bringing back popular franchises like ‘Planet of the Apes’ under Disney’s leadership has been a main focus for the studio.
The exact details of the sequel are still under wraps, but we already have a few clues about where the story might go.
In ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,’ Noa (played by Owen Teague) becomes the leader of the Eagle Clan and learns more about the teachings of Caesar. The movie ends with tension between Noa and Mae (played by Freya Allan), as she is seen holding a pistol behind her back during their conversation. It’s unclear whether they can work together or if another war between humans and apes is on the horizon. The film also revealed that bunkers full of healthy humans are still out there, and they communicate using satellites.
‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ earned over $397 million worldwide. It made less than the three previous films in the modern ‘Planet of the Apes’ series but still managed to outgross 2017’s ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ in the U.S. by $25 million. The film now ranks as the tenth highest-grossing movie of the year.
We will have to be patient as the sequel isn’t expected to arrive until 2027.
