’21 Bridges’ Actor Stephan James Reportedly To Play John Stewart In Green Lantern Series

The actor seems to be the frontrunner for the role opposite Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan.

Jeff Sneider recently revealed that Stephan James has screen tested to play John Stewart in the upcoming ‘Lanterns.’ According to The InSneider report, Aaron Pierre is also eyed for the role, but executive producers and co-writers Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, Tom King, and DC Studios boss James Gunn are favoring Stephan.

‘Lanterns’ is reportedly a detective story styled after ‘True Detective,’ following the partnership between the seasoned Hal Jordan and newcomer John Stewart as they solve a murder mystery in the American heartland. Kyle Chandler is already set to play Jordan, with rumors suggesting Nathan Fillian’s possible appearance as Guy Gardner after his debut in next year’s ‘Superman.’

Gunn and Peter Safran are “thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon, and Tom at the helm.” They shared while announcing the new project, “John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and ‘Lanterns’ brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with ‘Superman’.”

‘Lanterns’ is set to premiere in 2026, following the release of ‘Superman’ on July 11, 2025. Meanwhile, ‘Creature Commandos’ is waiting to debut DC Universe’s first chapter in animation on December 5.
