Wired magazine recently reported that ‘28 Years Later’ used an iPhone 15 Pro Max for filming, following the footsteps of ‘28 Days Later,’ which was shot with a digital camcorder.
The production team went for the 15 Pro Max because the iPhone 16 series wasn’t out when the filming was taking place. Still, according to the outlet, everyone involved signed NDAs to keep the use of the phone under wraps.
In addition to the iPhone, filmmakers used extra equipment like a cage with an adapter that allowed for different lenses to be attached to make the setup more flexible for filming.
This isn’t the first time the franchise filmed with a camera available to the general consumer. Director Danny Boyle and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle used a Canon XL-1 digital camcorder while shooting ‘28 Days Later,’ both keeping costs low and achieving a realistic, gritty look that fit the storyline.
Projects outside the franchise saw similar attempts in past years, as well. Stephen Soderbergh’s ‘Unsane’ and ‘High Flying Bird’ were also shot on iPhone, as was Sean Baker’s ‘Tangerine.’
‘28 Years Later’ is set to hit theaters on June 20, 2025, with two more sequels to follow in the coming years.
