’28 Years Later’ Exec Teases Cillian Murphy’s Role in Upcoming Sequel

Murphy is returning as Jim in the upcoming movie.

Cillian Murphy is set to return as Jim in ’28 Years Later.’

In a recent interview with Deadline, executive producer Tom Rothman confirmed Murphy’s return and hinted that his character would be back ‘in a surprising way’:

“[He’ll return] in a surprising way and in a way that grows, let me put it that way. This is Danny at his best, combined with a very commercial genre, like we had with Edgar Wright and ‘Baby Driver.’ Sometimes when you put a real signature director into a commercial arena, it elevates it.”

’28 Years Later’ is the third installment in the series.

What Were the First Two Movies About?

’28 Days Later’ introduced Jim, a bicycle courier who wakes up from a coma to find society in ruins due to a highly contagious virus. The film was a hit with audiences and critics. It featured Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston, Megan Burns, and Brendan Gleeson.

’28 Weeks Later’ followed in 2007. It focuses on efforts to create a safe zone in London, but two young siblings accidentally reintroduce the virus while trying to find a photograph of their mother. This sequel starred Rose Byrne, Jeremy Renner, Imogen Poots, and Idris Elba. ’28 Weeks Later’ was well-received as well, but it didn’t quite match the original’s success.

The sequel to ’28 Days Later’ will feature Murphy, Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on June 20, 2025.
