5 Behind-The-Scenes Struggles Adèle Exarchopoulos Faced In ‘Blue Is The Warmest Colour’

Find out how Adèle Exarchopoulos triumphed over adversity, embracing the challenges of grueling working conditions, intimate scenes, and emotional turmoil during the making of the modern classic ‘Blue Is The Warmest Colour.’

The world of acting can be an incredibly rewarding yet demanding profession, pushing performers to their emotional and physical limits. Notable directors like Stanley Kubrick are known for their rigorous methods that challenge actors to deliver unforgettable performances.

Adèle Exarchopoulos, a young and talented French actress, faced her own set of unique struggles while filming the critically acclaimed movie, ‘Blue Is The Warmest Colour.’ Her experiences offer a glimpse into the challenges actors face in their pursuit of perfection on screen.

The Pressure Of Controversial Working Conditions

Director Abdellatif Kechiche‘s unorthodox and demanding approach to filmmaking became a topic of controversy during the production of ‘Blue Is The Warmest Colour.’ He would often require hundreds of takes for even the smallest of scenes, pushing Adèle and her co-star Léa Seydoux to their emotional and physical limits.

In an interview with Rain Magazine, Adèle mentioned that the intensity of Kechiche’s direction made the film appear incredibly realistic, as both actresses were genuinely struggling. However, this resulted in a strained relationship between the actresses and the director, with both stars expressing they did not wish to work with him again.

Enduring An Exhausting Filming Schedule

Initially planned to take two months to complete, the filming process of ‘Blue Is The Warmest Colour’ stretched to nearly five-and-a-half months. This extended schedule took a toll on the cast and crew, with over 800 hours of footage shot in total. The immense dedication to capturing every nuance of the story led to a grueling filming experience for Adèle, who had to stay focused and committed for an extended period.

Tackling Challenging And Intimate Sex Scenes

One of the most talked-about aspects of ‘Blue Is The Warmest Colour’ is the intimate and explicit sex scenes between Adèle and Léa Seydoux. During these scenes, the actresses wore prosthetic vulvas to perform oral sex and spent ten days filming one particular scene. In an interview with Yahoo, both actresses described these scenes as ‘very embarrassing’ and difficult to shoot. Despite the discomfort, they acknowledged the importance of portraying the visceral nature of love and sexuality.

Overcoming Real-Life Injuries

During a fight scene between Adèle and Léa Seydoux, Adèle accidentally cut herself when pushed out of a glass door. Despite her injury and bleeding, director Abdellatif Kechiche insisted on continuing to film. Adèle was also directed to be slapped for real by Léa Seydoux, adding to the intensity and authenticity of the scene but also contributing to the challenging nature of the shoot.

Confronting Emotional Struggles

One of the most heart-wrenching scenes in ‘Blue Is The Warmest Colour’ is the break-up scene between Adèle and Léa Seydoux’s characters. The filming of this scene took an entire night without any breaks, leaving Adèle emotionally drained. The cafe scene also proved challenging for Adèle as it coincided with Léa Seydoux’s last day on set. The genuine sadness she felt during this moment translated into a powerful and authentic performance.

Powering Through And Setting New Standards

Adèle Exarchopoulos’s career carries on, and her experiences in ‘Blue Is The Warmest Colour’ provide insight into the realities of an actor’s life.
