‘SMILF’s Premise
‘SMILF,‘ a dark comedy series, debuted on Showtime on November 5, 2017. Starring and helmed by Frankie Shaw, the show is rooted in Shaw’s own experiences. Its title, a playful twist on the acronym ‘MILF,’ with the ‘S’ representing ‘single’ or ‘Southie’ – is a nod to South Boston where the series is set.
The storyline revolves around Bridgette Bird, portrayed by Shaw, a single mother from South Boston. She is navigating the complexities of life while aspiring to provide for her son, Larry Bird. The cast includes names like Rosie O’Donnell, who portrays Tutu, Bridgette’s mother.
Rosie O’Donnell stepped in for the role initially intended for Roseanne Barr, who had to withdraw due to a knee injury. The show also features performances from Miguel Gomez, Connie Britton, Melanie Griffith, Sherie Rene Scott, Claudia O’Doherty, Ari Graynor, Samara Weaving, and Raven Goodwin, with Goodwin’s role expanding in the second season.
The first season garnered positive feedback and had an 82% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite this strong start, the second season had a significant drop in viewership. Still, it received critical acclaim, securing a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Why Was The Show Canceled?
‘SMILF’ faced challenges beyond ratings. Allegations of misconduct on the set, especially concerning the sex scenes, emerged. These allegations led to the departure of co-star Samara Weaving and an investigation by ABC Studios. Afterward, Frankie Shaw’s overall deal with ABC Studios was suspended.
Following these events, Showtime announced on March 8, 2019, the cancellation of ‘SMILF’ after two seasons. This decision came despite preparations having been made for a third season, including location scouting in the UK by Shaw.
The network cited a range of factors behind their decision but expressed pride in the two seasons produced. The final episodes of the second season aired as planned, concluding on March 31, 2019.
Will ‘SMILF’ Return For a New Season?
As of December 2023, there are no updates regarding the revival of ‘SMILF’ for a third season. Despite its early success and critical acclaim, it remains concluded in its second season. The series had even been featured in ‘The 17 Best TV Shows For Women Of 2017’ by Refinery 29.
