‘House Of Dragons’ Milly Alcock Is The New Supergirl Despite Rumors Said Otherwise

This comes after much guessing about who would play the famous superhero.

According to recent reports by Deadline, Milly Alcock, best known for her role in HBO’s ‘House of the Dragon,’ has officially been cast as the new Supergirl in the DC Universe.

At the time of the announcement, Gunn drew a contrast between Superman’s upbringing and Supergirl’s past, hinting at a grittier portrayal of the character:

“In our series, we see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

Confirming Deadline’s news about the casting decision, Gunn took to Instagram to praise Alcock’s talent and her suitability for the role, saying:

“This is accurate. Milly is a fantastically talented young actor, and I’m incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU. Yes, I first became aware of her in ‘House of the Dragon,’ but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for Supergirl. She embodies Kara as envisioned by Tom King, Bilquis Evely, and Ana Nogueira.”

Emilia Jones Had Said No To Supergirl Role

The casting process for Supergirl had its share of drama.

In a recent episode of the podcast The Hot Mic, Emilia Jones reportedly turned down the opportunity to screen test for the role in ‘Superman: Legacy.’ This decision narrowed down the field to Alcock and Donnelly, with both actresses testing for the role in Atlanta under the watchful eyes of Gunn and Peter Safran. You can read the details here.

As is recently confirmed, Alcock emerged victorious in the race for the role.

Will Supergirl Appear in ‘Superman: Legacy’?

While there is speculation about Supergirl making an appearance in Gunn’s upcoming ‘Superman: Legacy,’ this remains unconfirmed. What is certain, however, is Alcock’s debut in a DC-based project before taking the lead in the solo feature, ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.’

First announced a year ago at DC’s studio press day, this project is based on the 2022 comic book series by Tom King, with Bilquis Evely as the illustrator. The director for the film is yet to be announced.

Slated for release on July 11, 2025, ‘Superman: Legacy‘ will focus on Superman’s dual life as a reporter and a secret crime-fighter. The cast includes David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, among others.

Following her introduction in ‘Superman: Legacy,’ Alcock’s Supergirl will take center stage in ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
