Speaking to TMZ, Ginnifer Goodwin recently shared her thoughts on Disney’s upcoming live-action Snow White film, set for release in March 2025.
The actress, who portrayed Snow White in ABC’s ‘Once Upon a Time’ for seven seasons, offered insights into the new adaptation, which will see Rachel Zegler step into the role. She remained diplomatic, stating:
“I mean, I can’t weigh in on what they’re doing over there. I think Disney has proven they generally know what they’re doing.”
When asked about the potential minimized role of Prince Charming in the new film, Goodwin humorously referenced her real-life marriage to Josh Dallas, her co-star from ‘Once Upon a Time’:
“I’m the wrong person to ask because I married my Prince Charming, so I’m all about the Prince Charming. But Hollywood knows better than I do how to make a movie.”
Goodwin also expressed her eagerness to watch the remake. Expressing her love for Disney and Snow White, she said:
“I can’t wait to see it, to be honest. I am a Disneyphile and a big fan of Snow White, and I have full faith that they’ll make it work.”
From 2011 to 2017, Goodwin played Snow White and her real-world counterpart, Mary Margaret Blanchard, in ‘Once Upon a Time.‘ The series concluded its seven-season run in 2018.
What is the Controversy With the New ‘Snow White’?
Directed by Marc Webb, the upcoming Snow White film has been a topic of discussion since its announcement. Rachel Zegler’s casting as Snow White challenged traditional depictions of the character. Zegler, a Colombian American actress, faced backlash following the announcement in June 2021.
Addressing the controversy, she talked about the importance of diverse representation in a 2023 interview with Andrew Garfield:
“You don’t normally see Snow Whites that are of Latin descent… But you don’t particularly see people who look like me or are me playing roles like that.”
Peter Dinklage also weighed in on the film’s approach, criticizing it for not modernizing the story of the seven dwarfs. He expressed his views on Marc Maron’s ‘WTF’ podcast, saying:
“Literally, no offense to anyone, but I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White. But you’re still telling the story of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.’ Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me. You’re progressive in one way, but then you’re still making that f*cking backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together. What the f*ck are you doing, man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soap box? I guess I’m not loud enough.”
Disney’s ‘Snow White‘ is a musical fantasy film co-produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Marc Platt Productions. It is a live-action remake of the 1937 animated feature and includes original songs by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Filming took place at Pinewood Studios, England, and the release, initially set for March 2024, has been postponed to March 2025.
