Although he was the one who raised fan expectations about the ‘Kick-Ass’ reboot, Matthew Vaughn recently told The Playlist that he has no plans to direct it because he’s tired.
Talking about the reboot, Vaughn said its intention is not to rehash previous films but to offer an engaging experience for fans:
“The reboot is a reflection of the world we now live in, what’s happened to superhero films and comics, and where we are now. So all I can say is people will be very surprised. And I didn’t want to go back to the world of ‘Kick-Ass’ just to do a ‘Kick-Ass 3,’ and it’s the same, but it’s not the same. It’s not what anyone expects, but there will be enough in it for people to go, ‘OK, that’s different, but it’s pretty damn cool.'”
Vaughn then explained that he wanted to step back from the director’s chair, citing the challenges of juggling multiple high-profile projects and the physical toll it has taken:
“Every time I do these interviews, everyone’s always asking about all these millions of movies that we should or could be making. But I’ve just got to put some infrastructure in my life because being the one-man band and playing all the instruments… a) I’m getting too tired, but b) you know, there’s no such thing as a one-man orchestra, and that’s what we need to build right now.”
Vaughn confirmed his continued involvement in the ‘Kick-Ass’ reboot as a co-producer and revealed that a new director and cast have already been chosen for the project, though their identities remain under wraps.
The Future of ‘Kick-Ass’ Franchise
Vaughn, who also directed ‘Argylle,’ shared insights into his decision during a recent interview with The Playlist.
Based on the comic book series by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr., the original ‘Kick-Ass‘ movie starred Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloë Grace Moretz, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse among an ensemble cast, earning critical acclaim after the screening.
Further expanding the franchise, Vaughn revealed plans for a trilogy connected to the ‘Kick-Ass’ universe. ‘School Fight’ has already been completed and is set for release later this year. Directed by Damien Walters in his feature film debut, the film promises to maintain the original’s storytelling.
In addition to his work on the ‘Kick-Ass’ series, Vaughn is also gearing up for several other projects, including ‘Flash Gordon,’ ‘Kingsman: The Blue Blood,’ ‘The King’s Man: The Traitor King,’ ‘I Am Pilgrim,’ and ‘Courage.’
Vaughn’s recent directorial effort, ‘Argylle,’ faced a challenging reception at the box office. Despite its star-studded cast, the film’s opening weekend earnings fell short of expectations.
