Jon Bernthal Reportedly Refused Daredevil Role Because He ‘Hated What Marvel Was Doing’

He didn’t like the show’s first idea but agreed to come back when it was changed.

According to fan reports on Twitter, Jon Bernthal initially turned down the opportunity to reprise his role in the upcoming Disney+ series, ‘Daredevil: Born Again.’

According to a fan who recalled their experience meeting Bernthal at an event on X (formerly Twitter,) the actor didn’t want to be a part of the initial vision for ‘Daredevil: Born Again’:

“[I] had the pleasure of meeting Jon Bernthal again today! got to talk to him about Daredevil Born Again. He told me he hated what they were doing with DD before the whole rewrite, and he actually turned down the project, but now that Karen is back, (amongst other things) he’s back in.”

The fan then continued, reporting that Bernthal didn’t want to play Punisher as they ‘haven’t been getting it right’:

“He told me that he’s apparently been turning down Marvel when it comes to playing Punisher over and over again because they hadn’t been getting it right, but the small part he now has in ‘DD: Born Again’ is good in his eyes.”

‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Went Under a Creative Overhaul

Set to premiere in 2025, ‘Daredevil: Born Again‘ underwent a creative overhaul during its development phase. Initially led by Matt Corman and Chris Ord, the series was envisioned with an episodic structure and a lighter tone.

However, following the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike and production suspension, Marvel Studios opted for a new direction. Dario Scardapane was appointed as the new showrunner, with Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead stepping in as lead directors, shifting the series to a serialized format like its Netflix predecessor.

‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is set to bring back Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, marking Cox’s fourth appearance as the character within the MCU. The series will also see the return of Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, and Wilson Bethel as Benjamin Poindexter/Bullseye.

Characters such as Foggy, Karen, and Bullseye, were not part of the initial revival plans but was made possible by the series’ creative reset.

The series will also introduce new antagonists, including Muse, a deranged and mysterious graffiti artist from the comics. It will also feature newcomers Michael Gandolfini, Margarita Levieva, Nikki M. James, Michael Gaston, Arty Froushan, Sandrine Holt, and Genneya Walton, with Walton portraying a young journalist connected to the original Netflix series.
