‘Repo Man 2’ Director Reveals How He Modernized The Cult Classic: ‘Everything Has Changed’

In ‘Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer,’ technology changes the game for Otto.

In a new interview with Inverse, Alex Cox, the name behind the 1984 sci-fi black comedy cult classic ‘Repo Man,’ shared details about the sequel, ‘Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer.’

Cox’s original film, starring Harry Dean Stanton and Emilio Estevez, was praised for its blend of science fiction, satire, and punk rock ethos of the 1980s. Fast forward to the present, Cox is set to bring the ‘Repo Man’ universe into the modern era with a narrative that resonates with today’s technological and societal changes.

“The advent of incredible technology means, for the repo man, that everything has changed — and nothing has changed.

Now, rather than physically hunting down cars, Otto uses other techniques:

“Otto used to spend all night cruising around bad neighborhoods looking for cars. Now he spends all night on the internet doing the same thing. Instead of hotwiring the vehicle, Otto takes control of the onboard computers and directs it to the repo yard or the sheriff’s substation. Yet this is not enough for Otto, who has only aged by 90 minutes in the last 40 years. He yearns for past simplicities: beer, booty, and no nuclear war.”

So, despite the technological leap, Cox says Otto still finds himself longing for the simpler pleasures of life.

Latest Updates About ‘Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer’

Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer‘ finds its footing in the present day, leaving the analog world of the 1980s for the digital age. Kiowa Gordon stars as Otto, originally portrayed by Estevez, with Angela Sarafyan joining the cast as Lagunitas, Otto’s office manager.

The sequel revolves around Otto’s adaptation to the information age after his return to Earth from an intergalactic journey, having aged only 90 minutes in the last 40 years.

As for the production of ‘Repo Man 2,’ Cox is optimistic about starting filming in June/July 2024, though the project is still in the process of being presented to studios. The film promises to bridge the gap between the original and the potential to have a new generation of fans with its modernized version.

Cox’s attempt to revisit ‘Repo Man’ is not his first. Previously, projects such as ‘Otto’s Hawaiian Holiday’ and the spin-off ‘Repo Chick‘ explored different dimensions of the repo world. However, ‘The Wages of Beer’ marks a different effort to authentically update the cult classic for contemporary audiences.
