Answering fan questions on Instagram, Beau DeMayo, the showrunner of the ‘X-Men ’97,’ confirmed that the series will not be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Following its nostalgic trailer release by Disney+, there was speculation about ‘X-Men ’97’s connection to the broader Marvel Universe. However, responding to a fan question on Instagram, the showrunner of the series cleared the air. As per Collider, he wrote:
“We are our own thing.”
Despite the merger of Disney and Fox in 2019, which sparked hopes among fans for the X-Men’s integration into the MCU, DeMayo’s statement has made it clear that ‘X-Men ’97’ will chart its own course. This decision aligns with Marvel Studios’ previous approach of keeping animated and live-action projects distinct, as seen with the animated series ‘What If…?’
Some Believe The Show Might Be Too Woke
Some ‘critics’ raised concerns over the series’ thematic direction, suggesting that it may be overly influenced by what they term ‘Disney wokeness.’ However, long-time fans of the franchise defended its engagement with social issues, touching upon the X-Men’s foundational role in addressing themes of bigotry, intolerance, and the fight for equality.
Stan Lee, co-creator of The X-Men, had previously talked about Marvel’s commitment to reflecting real-world issues, advocating for inclusivity, and standing against hatred and bigotry. ‘X-Men ’97’ aims to continue this legacy. You can read the details here.
‘X-Men ’97’ is a direct continuation of the 90s animated series, picking up after the events of its fifth season, which saw the death of Charles Xavier and left a mission for his pupils. The first season, which is set to premiere on Disney+ on March 22, 2024, will see the mutants facing off against Magneto, who takes over the Xavier Institute in a plot spanning 10 episodes.
Besides, there’s a buzz about a potential Spider-Man crossover hinted at in the trailer.
