‘Dune 2’ Director Says Anya Taylor-Joy’s Casting Secret Was An ‘Experiment On Hollywood’

Denis Villeneuve revealed why the casting of Anya Taylor-Joy was kept a secret until the film’s premiere.

The big reveal happened at the London premiere of  ‘Dune: Part Two’ earlier this month, when Anya Taylor-Joy made her first public appearance with the rest of the cast. Denis Villeneuve shared at the New York premiere on Sunday that he wanted to see if it was possible to keep a secret in Hollywood, known for its rumors and leaks.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Villeneuve said:

“I think that Hollywood is the most gossipy town on earth and I wanted, as an experiment, to see how long we could keep a secret. We did it.”

He added more about the lengths they went to maintain secrecy:

“It was a special unit, we went to Africa to shoot with Anya under super-secrecy. I just loved the idea to keep something a surprise for the audience until the very end; it was like a gift I wanted to keep for the fans.”

The Actress’ Thoughts On Her Role And The Film

In ‘Dune: Part Two,’ Anya Taylor-Joy plays Alia Atreides and joins a leading cast that includes Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and Christopher Walken, among others.

Though the actress’ involvement in the film remained a secret, the inclusion of the character made the headlines, with early reports suggesting possible changes to her from the books.

After she revealed herself, Taylor-Joy shared her excitement about joining the project in a video shared on Warner Bros. TikTok:

“This is a dream come true. The books are incredible, but with this cast and with Denis, it doesn’t get any better than that.”

She also praised the movie, calling it ‘one of the best movies I’ve ever seen in my entire life. Genuinely, Denis has killed it.’

‘Dune: Part Two’ hits theaters this Friday, March 1.
