‘The Batman’s Paul Dano Claims ‘Superhero Fatigue’ Is Not A Bad Thing

Dano thinks it’s good we’re getting tired of superhero movies.

In a recent discussion with The Independent, Paul Dano,  who starred as the Riddler in ‘The Batman,’ offered a new perspective on the ‘superhero fatigue’ phenomenon, suggesting that this trend could actually benefit the genre.

As box office numbers for recent superhero films like ‘The Flash,’ ‘The Marvels,’ and ‘Madame Web’ failed to meet expectations, Dano argued this period could either revive comic book movies with new energy or encourage the development of different stories:

“It’s an interesting moment where everybody has to go like, ‘OK – what now?’ Hopefully from that, somebody either breathes new life into [comic book movies], or something else blossoms which is not superheroes. I’m sure there will still be some good ones yet to come, but I think it’s kind of a welcome moment.”

Still, Dano remained optimistic about the potential for quality work in the future. Saying there needs to be a shift from quantity-driven content to quality-focused narratives, he added:

“It’s a larger thing, too. As soon as the word ‘content’ came into what we do – meaning making movies or TV – it meant quantity over quality, which I think was a big misstep. And I certainly don’t need that as a viewer or as an artist.”

The actor also reflected on the success of ‘The Batman,’ attributing the film’s positive reception to its script and direction that set it apart from the typical comic book movies.

‘Batman’ is Back With the Sequel ‘The Batman — Part II’

Meanwhile, ‘The Batman’ is set to return with a new trilogy and create a separate Batman-centric universe separate from the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).

The sequel, titled ‘The Batman – Part II,‘ is slated for release on October 3, 2025, and filming is expected to commence in August 2024 in England. Robert Pattinson, Matt Reeves, and Mattson Tomlin are all confirmed to return, with plans for new villains and to introduce Robin.

As for ‘superhero fatigue,’ fans believe it’s caused by the saturation of the market and the mixed quality of releases from major studios like Sony, DC, and Fox. Some even argue that it’s Sony who ‘ruins’ Marvel’s reputation.
