DeWanda Wise Admits She’ll Return To Marvel If The Role Is ‘Meaty Enough’

The actress talks about her departure from Marvel and possible return under certain conditions.

DeWanda Wise stepped away from the Maria Rambeau role in 2018’s ‘Captain Marvel’ due to scheduling conflicts with ‘She’s Gotta Have It’ Season 2. The Direct recently asked the actress whether she would consider coming back to the franchise in a different role, and she said:

“Yeah, if the chance came and it was meaty enough.”

Why Did She Really Turn Down The First Offer?

Reports previously quoted Wise calling Marvel’s filmmaking approach ‘her own personal nightmare’ and claimed she rejected the role for that reason instead of what was told to the media. The actress explained her words during the interview:

“It was just both of those things were true at one time. You know what I mean? It was like, can – That was always my question. You know, the concern about acting in blockbusters is not exclusive to Marvel. It’s acting in blockbusters.”

She continued:

“I think about some of the greatest performances. I think about [how] Robert Downey Jr. is extraordinary. Like he’s extraordinary in those series. Hugh Jackman in ‘Logan.’ Hugh Jackman in Logan is literally what made me want to veer into action. I was like, ‘Oh, if you can? Well, if we’re doing that then maybe I will stop doing these indie movies and see what you guys are doing over here.’ So yeah, no, it wasn’t that at all.”

Maria Rambeau Is In ‘X-Men’ Now

Lashana Lynch took on the role of Maria Rambeau in ‘Captain Marvel’ and following projects including ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ and ‘The Marvels.’

Rambeau appeared as X-Men’s Binary and met her Earth-616 daughter in a ‘The Marvels’ post-credits scene last year. Lynch commented on the character’s new place in the mutant team in a chat with ComicBookMovie:

“That’s something that came across time as a slow plan. Well, for me, anyway. They probably had it planned the whole time. I genuinely don’t know what’s next, but I think with where the franchise is going, it’s naturally going to be exciting. And I’m excited to see where it goes next.”

Maria Rambeau may come back in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ or future ‘Avengers’ films now that the MCU introduced her as a mutant.
