‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ Season 2 Confirmed But No Donald Glover And Maya Erskine

The show will likely go on with a new cast.

Head of Amazon MGM Studios, Jennifer Salke, recently announced a new season for ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith.’ However, Variety reported that Donald Glover and Maya Erskine will not return as the main characters.

Salke’s statement at Amazon’s advertisers presentation in New York read:

“We are excited to announce that a second season of our groundbreaking spy series, ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith,’ is in the works for our global Prime Video customers.”

She explained:

“The success of the first season, with its incredibly modern, sexy reinvention of the original film, is a testament to the brilliant creators Donald Glover and Francesa Sloane. We are proud to bring you another season filled with unforgettable journeys and new adventures.”

What Will Happen In Season 2?

Glover will continue as a co-creator and executive producer on the series with Francesca Sloane. He will also be out on a world tour as Childish Gambino from August to February 2025.

Season 2 will likely take an anthology approach and feature a new couple because Erskine and Glover’s Jane and John Smith were left in a dire situation in the Season 1 finale.

The Show Was Going To Star Someone Else

Prime Video’s ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ was a reimagining of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s 2005 film of the same name. It premiered in February 2024.

Donald Glover was originally set to co-create and star with Phoebe Waller-Bridge in the show, but the two clashed over creative direction. The actor told The Hollywood Reporter after the debut:

“I don’t think we ever felt comfortable enough with each other, and that’s okay. That’s what happens when you’re two captains. It’s like, ‘This is how I run my ship.’ ‘Well, this is how I run my ship.’ And it’s such a big idea, this show; I don’t think it can have two captains.”

‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ became a critical acclaim with 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
