X-Men ’97 Recent Season Finale Had A Secret ‘Man Of Steel’ Reference, The Showrunner Reveals

The recently-fired Season 1 showrunner shared details about the animated show.

‘X-Men ’97’ Season 1 finale aired on May 15, and writer Beau DeMayo took to X shortly after to reveal a moment from Zack Snyder’s ‘Man of Steel’ that inspired a scene in the episode.

DeMayo posted a video of Superman pouncing on Zod to protect his mother and said Rogue’s attack on Bastion in the season finale was a parallel to this. He wrote:

“I was likely subconsciously influenced by this when writing the ‘X-Men ’97’ finale beat of Rogue punching Bastion. That’s not Superman hammering Zod. It’s Clark, a son furiously defending the woman who raised and protected him. The action is driven by emotion not plot.”

Snyder’s DC Film Was A Big Inspiration For The Showrunner

The writer also drew inspiration from ‘Man of Steel’ for another scene in ‘X-Men ’97’ Episode 6 where Storm regained her powers in a sequence similar to Superman’s first flight.

DeMayo shared the original scene and commented:

“Sorry, Scoersce, this is cinema. Everything, the aspirational shot design and music, the flight choreography, Clark going from sauntering with heavy burden to soaring and smiling, sell the hope and power of an outsider discovering he’s too big for his adopted home.”

A New Writer Will Take Over In The Upcoming Season

Beau DeMayo will not be the head writer in the Disney+ show’s second season. Michael Lesslie will replace him, but the upcoming episodes will include some ideas from DeMayo.

The writer shared earlier this month:

“I did write a lot of Season 2. However, unlike Season 1, I will not be heavily involved or leading production, cast records, design, editorial, post, music, etc., nor doing any production rewrites as it relates to the creative vision of the show.”

He added:

“This is why I’ve said I can’t really speak to Season 2. But, looking forward to seeing the final product with you all whenever it airs. I have high hopes.”

‘X-Men ’97’ Season 3 and 4 are currently in the works.
