Jennifer Aniston Sheds Tears After A Question About ‘Friends’

She fondly remembered the show’s beginning and the close relationships with her fellow cast members.

Jennifer Aniston recently got emotional during an interview when talking about her time on the TV show ‘Friends.’

Aniston was with Abbott Elementary’s Quinta Brunson, as part of Variety’s ‘Actors On Actors’ series. During the interview, she was asked how she felt about ‘Friends’ turning 30 this year. This question made her teary-eyed as she started thinking about her time on the show:

“Oh god, don’t make me cry. I’m sorry I just started thinking about…”

She laughed and said she was also turning 30 this year. Aniston then shared a memory from when the show first aired. She remembered the excitement she felt with co-stars Matthew Perry and Lisa Kudrow on the day the pilot episode was going to premiere:

“It’s crazy, 30. It’s so strange to even think that it’s 30 years old because I remember the day that it was going to premiere on NBC. Me and Matthew Perry were having lunch somewhere and we knew Lisa was getting her hair coloured so we ran into the hair salon and snuck up. She was by the hair bowl and I took the nozzle and started washing her hair.”

Aniston says the cast still keeps in touch and considers each other family. She said she had a long FaceTime call with Courteney Cox the night before.

She Says The World Has Changed Since Then

Aniston noted that there was no social media or internet when ‘Friends’ aired in the ‘90s and early ‘00s. This made their lives more private, and they could focus on their work without worrying about public comments. She described it as a simpler, more innocent time:

“It was in the ‘90s and early ‘00s, and we had the luxury of there not being social media or the internet. So we were so isolated and protected. We weren’t faced with what people were commenting and ripping you apart. It was a dreamy time, and I know I sound nostalgic but we were really about the work. We were about the show. It wasn’t about who was the best, it was just an innocent time where we could roam about the world a lot easier. Even though it became a big thing a year into it, we were really able to be together and support each other.”

Aniston Is Sad About Matthew Perry’s Passing

The interview also touched on the recent passing of her co-star Matthew Perry, who played Chandler Bing. Perry died on October 28, 2023, at his home in California. His death was caused by ‘cardiovascular overstimulation and respiratory depression’ due to drug use.

Aniston shared that she had been texting with Perry on the morning of his death and that he seemed happy and healthy:

“He was happy. He was healthy. He had quit smoking. He was getting in shape. He was happy — that’s all I know. I was literally texting with him that morning, funny Matty. He was not in pain. He wasn’t struggling. He was happy. I want people to know he was really healthy, and getting healthy. He was on a pursuit. He worked so hard. He really was dealt a tough one. I miss him dearly. We all do. Boy, he made us laugh really hard.”

Aniston previously shared a heartfelt tribute to Perry on social media. She said that losing him felt like losing a part of their family.

Authorities launched a criminal investigation into Perry’s death.
