‘Transformers One’ producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura talked about the new film and the classic 1986 movie ‘The Transformers: The Movie.’
At the recent Annecy Animation Festival, Di Bonaventura admitted that he doesn’t understand why fans love the original film so much. He says the 1986 movie was surprisingly dark and a ‘downer movie’:
“What’s so surprising about the ’86 film is how dark it is. Honestly, I don’t understand why people love it so much. For some, maybe it was their first cinematic experience, but it’s really a downer movie. Interestingly, when we showed our trailer for the first time, the fans’ reaction was to compare our movie to that one. But they’re so not comparable because that’s so dark, and this has so much humanity. They’re completely different movies in many ways.”
So, Di Bonaventura thinks his movie has more humanity and emotion.
The Film Comes To Theaters This Year
Lorenzo Di Bonaventura produced all the live-action Transformers movies since the first one in 2007. There have been seven live-action films in total, and the latest is ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ in 2023. The 1986 animated film is the only theatrical ‘Transformers’ movie that he did not produce. The 1986 movie was rated PG and was released in North America on August 8, 1986.
‘Transformers One’ tells the origin story of how Optimus Prime and Megatron went from being allies to enemies. The movie features Chris Hemsworth as the voice of young Optimus Prime and Brian Tyree Henry as young Megatron. Other names in the voice cast include Scarlett Johansson, Keegan-Michael Key, Jon Hamm, and Steve Buscemi. The film is directed by Josh Cooley, who previously won an Oscar for ‘Toy Story 4.’
