Viewers noticed that ‘Borderlands’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ had similar vibes and aesthetic following the former’s early trailers. Eli Roth spoke about these comparisons in a recent chat with Total Film:
“There’s going to be similarities no matter what you do, just because of the nature of the subject matter. I was very conscious of not remaking ‘Guardians.’ [Audiences will] see the movie, and they’ll see it’s different.”
He mentioned not wanting his new project to be another ‘good video game movie’ and added:
“[I want the audience to see it as] a really fun science-fiction film, period.”
The Upcoming Video Game Adaptation’s Plot
Roth co-wrote the script for ‘Borderlands’ with Joe Crombie based on Gearbox Software’s video game series. The film’s official synopsis read:
“Lilith, an infamous bounty hunter with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home, Pandora, the most chaotic planet in the galaxy. Her mission is to find the missing daughter of Atlas, the universe’s most powerful S.O.B. Lilith forms an unexpected alliance with a ragtag team of misfits – Roland, a seasoned mercenary on a mission; Tiny Tina, a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg, Tina’s musclebound protector; Tannis, the oddball scientist who’s seen it all; and Claptrap, a wiseass robot. Together, these unlikely heroes must battle an alien species and dangerous bandits to uncover one of Pandora’s most explosive secrets. The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other.”
Cast And Release Date
Cate Blanchett played Lilith opposite Kevin Hart’s Roland and Jamie Lee Curtis’s Dr. Patricia Tannis. Roth said of Blanchett’s part:
“You’ve seen [her] twirling the baton [in Tár], but you haven’t seen her twirling guns behind her back. She’s a master at it. A big part of the fun of the movie is watching it and thinking, ‘I can’t believe they all did this crazy stuff.’ Cate with a flame-thrower — a real flame-thrower — come on! That’s pretty badass.”
Jack Black (Claptrap), Ariana Greenblatt (Tiny Tina), Florian Munteanu (Krieg), Edgar Ramirez (Atlas), and Gina Gershon (Mad Moxxi) joined Blanchett in the cast.
‘Borderlands’ is set for release on August 9, 2024.
