Simon Pegg Isn’t Sure A ‘Shaun Of The Dead’ Reboot Is Necessary

He hopes it never happens.

Simon Pegg shares his thoughts on the idea of a ‘Shaun of the Dead’ reboot.

The original movie was very special to Pegg, Edgar Wright, and Nick Frost, and it seems this makes it hard for Pegg to imagine a new version.

Universal Pictures owns the rights to ‘Shaun of the Dead’ and could decide to reboot it if they wanted. However, Pegg says that the original movie was very personal to them and that a reboot would feel wrong:

“I mean, Universal owns it. If they choose to reboot it, then they can if they want I guess. Although Edgar and I would be incensed.”

He Says Many Of The Jokes Are Personal

Pegg explains that the joke about Ed and Shaun always staying at The Winchester pub was based on his and Nick Frost’s habit of staying in a North London pub instead of going out in Soho:

“The whole joke of Ed and Shaun not being able to ever come out of The Winchester was real. That was about Nick and I, that was about our decision to just stay in a North London pub. Edgar was always in town. He was always in Soho, and he always wanted us to come into town and hang out at The Groucho, and we never did. We always wanted to be in The Shepherds [pub]. My girlfriend, now my wife, was the same. She was like, ‘Are we going to The Shepherds again?’ That inspired that whole storyline.”

Another personal element was the story about Shaun’s mum and stepdad. Edgar Wright’s decision to kill off Shaun’s mum in the movie was also based on their real lives, and Pegg agreed it was the right choice.

There was a time when an American TV series remake of ‘Shaun of the Dead’ was considered, but nothing came of it. There are currently no plans to reboot ‘Shaun of the Dead.’
