Will ‘Despicable Me’ Continue With A Live-Action Minions Movie? The Director Reveals

The Minions recently returned in the new Universal Pictures animation, ‘Despicable Me 4.’

The franchise director, Chris Renaud, made it clear in a new chat with Film Hounds magazine that he had no interest in turning the Minions into live-action despite the success Disney achieved with the concept.

“God, I hope not. That’s my answer,” Renaud answered the outlet’s question. “I mean if there were conversations like that, I haven’t been privy to them. But for me, what defines the world is that it is animated and it allows us to get away with what we get away with. Like locking a minion in the vending machine, or you know, blowing up Gru (Steve Carell) when he attacks Vector (Jason Segel). These are really cartoon ideas, like what would have been in a Bugs Bunny cartoon.”

“I think it just becomes something completely different if you do a live-action version. For me personally, not very appealing. But again, who knows what can happen but that’s my personal feeling about it,” he continued.

Renaud directed the first two ‘Despicable Me’ films released in 2010 and 2013, and came back to direct the latest, ‘Despicable Me 4.’ He also produced the 2015 ‘Minions’ and 2022’s ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru.’

‘Despicable Me 4’ grossed $850 million worldwide after its release in July and helped the franchise break a record by reaching $5 billion in global ticket sales.

Illumination and Universal revealed plans for ‘Minions 3’ last month. The Pierre Coffin-directed film will see release on June 30, 2027.
