‘Doctor Who’ Showrunner Keeps Hopes Up For Season 3 Despite Cancellation Rumors

The writer is working on new episodes, though there’s still no word from Disney and BBC about Season 3.

Russell T. Davies returned for the ‘Doctor Who’ reboot on Disney+ last year, and his first season on the streamer concluded in early 2024. Season 2 is now in the works for a 2025 release, but the show’s future after that is unclear due to low-rating the latest episodes received.

Still, Davies is optimistic about a possible Season 3. “It’s an industry decision, it’s like any business—these things take time,” he explained in a new interview with SFX Magazine. “I think the decision will come after the transmission of Season Two. That’s what we’re expecting, that’s what we’ve always been heading towards.”

While ‘Doctor Who’ ended up as one of Disney+’s most in-demand series in the US, its high production and marketing costs didn’t match the ‘underwhelming’ viewership figures of Season 1. BBC saw positive streaming numbers on iPlayer with at least 65 million views in 2024, but TV ratings still remained as a concern.

Some insiders shared earlier this summer that the show might not continue past its second season as low viewership would break the deal between BBC and Disney+.

‘Doctor Who’ might end or return to its low-budget status in the future, but it is certain to return with a Christmas episode by Steven Moffat soon. The production for the rest of Season 2 is also completed though a specific release date is still to be announced.
