Aubrey Plaza got sick while performing ‘Danny and the Deep Blue Seas’ with Patti LuPone last year. LuPone suggested a potential cure to help her get better though it ended up almost taking her life.
“Oh yes, she almost killed me,” Plaza recently revealed on ‘Late Night With Seth Meyers.’ “Well, it was a long story, but basically, I was really sick and she said, ‘You have to see my special nurse. His name is Joe. He comes at night.’”
LuPone promised that Joe would hook Plaza up to a machine that would give her “all the things that I get, and they’re gonna perk you right up.” Joe himself mentioned he would give her “some vitamins and things like that” before suggesting an additional substance that the ‘American Horror Story’ actress used to help her sleep.
Plaza agreed to the ‘Patti Special’ and quickly learned that “it was Benadryl… I thought it was going to be more like a children’s Benadryl [that makes you] a little groggy, but when you get Benadryl just injected intravenously… it was like a horse tranquilizer for me.”
The effects began to hit her when she got home, giving her slurred speech and cold sweats. As she was struggling to speak, LuPone tried to help: “She went, ‘I know what I’m gonna do. I’m gonna make you a piece of English muffin with peanut butter.’ And I couldn’t speak, and I was like [grunting]. I was having cold sweats, and I was cold, and then I was hot, and I kept going, ‘Joe, am I alright? Am I gonna make it?’ And he was like, ‘Oh, you’ll be fine.’”
Now, Plaza and LuPone are back together on-screen as Rio Vidal and Lilia Calderu in Marvel’s ‘WandaVision’ spinoff ‘Agatha All Along.’ The series premiered on Disney+ on September 18.
