Paramount Orders ‘Rugrats’ Live-Action Movie With Help Of CGI

The project is a modern take on the popular ’90s cartoon.

Nickelodeon’s classic ’90s cartoon ‘Rugrats’ is getting a new twist.

As per Deadline, Paramount announced that they are working on a live-action movie of the series, and it will also use CGI to bring the characters to life. The project will be directed by ‘Pitch Perfect’s Jason Moore. ‘Saturday Night Live’ star Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell are brought on board to write the movie’s script.

For those unfamiliar, ‘Rugrats’ was a hugely popular animated show that aired on Nickelodeon from 1991 to 2004. It followed the adventures of a group of babies led by one-year-old Tommy Pickles. Pickles, Chuckie, Phil, Lil, and his cousin Angelica all grew up in the same neighborhood. The show was one of Nickelodeon’s highest-rated programs during its run.

‘Rugrats’ also spawned a few movies, a sequel series called ‘All Grown Up,’ and even a reboot in 2021.

This isn’t the first time ‘Rugrats’ tried to make the jump to live-action. Paramount announced a similar project back in 2018. The movie had a planned release in 2021, but it was eventually removed from the studio’s schedule and never made it to theaters. The new version seems to be moving forward, but no release date has been confirmed yet.

If it goes well, it could open the door for other ’90s Nickelodeon shows to return. ‘CatDog,’ ‘Doug,’ ‘The Wild Thornberrys,’ and ‘Rocket Power’ might follow if this ‘Rugrats’ movie does well.
