Max has officially canceled ‘Velma.’
ComicBook.com reports that Warner Bros’ streaming service confirmed the decision in a statement on October 9. They ended the show after just two seasons.
Rumors about the cancellation started earlier when a background artist mentioned it during the recent Halloween special, but Max has now made it official. In their statement, Max thanked creators Mindy Kaling and Charlie Grandy for their work on the show, saying, “Over the past two seasons, Mindy Kaling and Charlie Grandy created an incredibly fun and fresh world within the iconic whodunit franchise. While we won’t be moving forward with another season, we thank them for their compelling coming-of-age storytelling, unrivaled clues, and hilarious hijinks.”
‘Velma’ first premiered in 2023, and gave the Scooby-Doo characters a more mature and edgy update. It focused on high school drama rather than the usual masked villains. The series got mixed reactions from fans, and many didn’t get on board with its crass humor and Scooby-Doo’s absence. The second season even introduced a tougher version of Scrappy-Doo, and it was far different from his original appearance.
‘Scooby-Doo’ never appeared in the first two seasons, but a subplot called ‘Project Scoob’ hinted at his possible introduction in season three. Now that ‘Velma’s been canceled, we will likely never see this new version of Scooby.
The final episode of the series seems to be the recent Halloween special titled ‘Velma: This Halloween Needs To Be More Special.’ The special wrapped up several storylines, but some stories remain unfinished, like Fred Jones, who was possessed by a magical book in the special. It’s also unknown if ‘Velma’ might find a new home on another streaming service.
‘Velma’ will remain a two-season show with no plans for a return.
