Disney’s ‘Freaky Friday’ Sequel Finally Has a Release Date

The film will see Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan returning to their roles.

Disney officially announced the release date for the highly anticipated sequel to ‘Freaky Friday.’

The new movie is called ‘Freakier Friday,’ and it’s set to hit theaters in August next year.

Walt Disney Studios shared a first-look image from the sequel on X. It shows Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as Tess and Anna Coleman. Both characters have their hands on their faces in the picture, just like in the original 2003 movie when they realized they swapped bodies. So, the two may experience another body swap in the new film.

‘Freakier Friday’ was first reported to be in development in May 2023, and production began in late June 2024. The sequel picks up years after Tess and Anna’s original body-swap adventure. This time, Anna has a daughter and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. Tess and Anna will have to adjust to a blended family, and they may have to deal with another surprising identity crisis. The movie will be directed by Nisha Ganatra, and the script is written by Jordan Weiss.

Several names from the original ‘Freaky Friday’ movie are returning, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Lindsay Lohan, Mark Harmon as Ryan, Chad Michael Murray as Jake, Christina Vidal Mitchell as Maddie, Haley Hudson as Peg, Lucille Soong as Pei-Pei’s mom, Stephen Tobolowsky as Mr. Elton Bates, and Rosalind Chao as Pei-Pei.

New cast members are Julia Butters, Manny Jacinto, Sophia Hammons, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan. Their roles haven’t been revealed, but Butters is expected to play Anna’s teenage daughter, and Jacinto is likely to play her love interest.

‘Freakier Friday’ is arriving in theaters on August 8, 2025.
