Ncuti Gatwa Shares Exciting Update On ‘Doctor Who’s Return

Season 3 is now confirmed.

Rumors since the release of ‘Doctor Who’ Season 1 on Disney+ suggested that the show wouldn’t see beyond the upcoming Season 2. But Ncuti Gatwa recently revealed that they were already set to start filming for future episodes next year.

“It is all going well,” he said during an appearance on ‘The Graham Norton Show.’ “We did the second series this year, the Christmas special is coming up, and we are filming a third series next year.”

The long-running sci-fi series returned in late 2023 with Russell T. Davies as the showrunner. Even with talks of potential cancellation due to low viewership numbers, Davies expressed confidence about moving forward with Season 3.

“It’s an industry decision, it’s like any business—these things take time,” he explained in an interview with SFX Magazine last month. “I think the decision will come after the transmission of Season Two. That’s what we’re expecting, that’s what we’ve always been heading towards.”

The holiday season will kick off with a ‘Doctor Who’ special titled ‘Joy to the World,’ written by Steven Moffat and featuring Nicola Coughlan in a mysterious role.

The release schedule for the rest of Season 2 is still to be announced. But Gatwa is sure to return alongside Millie Gibson, with Varada Sethu joining the TARDIS team as a new companion.

The franchise is also set to expand with a miniseries, ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea,’ starring Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. It will also see the return of Jemma Redgrave as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Alexander Devrient as Colonel Ibrahim.
