Tom Welling Explains The Weird Reason ‘Smallville’ Sequel Is On Hold

In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Tom Welling revealed why the ‘Smallville’ sequel is delayed.

“We want it to work. The honest answer is we have not been able to get Warner Brothers to give us the thumbs up,” the actor explained. “We need their permission.”

Welling clarified his words, “[Laughs] We haven’t even gotten a response! It’s the weirdest thing because it is more of a fan-driven idea. It’s not going to be a blockbuster. It’s not going to be a financial windfall for any of us.”

“We all like each other, we all like working together, and if we could do it, it’d be fun. But Warner Bros. – and I’m not hating on them – they just haven’t gotten back to us,” Tom added. “It’s not a priority for them. It’s like a not-returning-phone-calls-thing [laughs].”

Welling also said last month, “I’ll tell you where it’s at: We need Warner Brothers and DC to let us do it. We’ve got Al [Gough] and Miles [Millar,] who are very busy doing a TV show called ‘Wednesday.’ But they created ‘Smallville,’ they want to write it.”

“We just need to go ahead from DC and Warner Brothers,” the actor went on. “So if you know anybody over there…because, listen, this is a passion project. It’s not going to be a blockbuster, it’s for the fans. All the actors want to do the voices of the characters – we’re all in. We just need them to let us use the property.”

In October 2021, Welling shared that he and Michael Rosenbaum were working on an animated ‘Smallville’ sequel with plans to bring back original actors like John Glover, Annette O’Toole, and creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar.

‘Smallville’ first aired on The WB from 2001 to 2006, then moved to The CW until it ended in 2011. The show followed Clark Kent as he grew up in the Kansas town of Smallville and eventually became Superman.
