Ncuti Gatwa Confirms His Return For ‘Doctor Who’ Season 3: It’s Not Canceled

Ncuti Gatwa is confident ‘Doctor Who’ will return with Season 3.

Ncuti Gatwa, ‘Doctor Who’s 15th Doctor, shared that filming for Season 3 is scheduled to begin in 2025.

“It’s all going well,” Gatwa revealed. “We did the second series this year, the Christmas special is coming up, and we are filming a third series next year.”

Season 2 (under Disney+ branding) has already wrapped production, though an exact release date has not been set. Both Gatwa and Millie Gibson are confirmed to return for Season 2. ‘Doctor Who’ has not yet been confirmed for a third season in partnership with Disney+, with executive producer Russell T. Davies stating earlier this year that the decision remains uncertain. However, it seems Gatwa is sure about the show’s return.

Rumors since the release of ‘Doctor Who’ Season 1 on Disney+ suggested that the show wouldn’t see beyond the upcoming Season 2. While ‘Doctor Who’ ended up as one of Disney+’s most in-demand series in the US, its high production and marketing costs didn’t match the ‘underwhelming’ viewership figures of Season 1. BBC saw positive streaming numbers on iPlayer with at least 65 million views in 2024, but TV ratings still remained a concern.

The sci-fi series returned in late 2023 with Russell T. Davies as the showrunner. Even with talks of potential cancellation due to low viewership numbers, Davies expressed confidence about moving forward with Season 3. “It’s an industry decision, it’s like any business—these things take time,” he explained in an interview with SFX Magazine. “I think the decision will come after the transmission of Season Two. That’s what we’re expecting, that’s what we’ve always been heading towards.”
