Cynthia Erivo Apologizes For ‘Crying Too Much’ During ‘Wicked’ Press Tour

Erivo plays Elphaba Thropp in the film.

Cynthia Erivo is sorry for crying too much on the ‘Wicked’ press tour.

“We’re sorry. It just happens. It happens,” the actress told Entertainment Tonight. “We can’t help it. We’re trying our best, but there’s a lot of emotional things that happen and we’re just going with it.”

Ariana Grande added, “Yeah, you need to understand. It’s been like three years, people! Why does emotional availability scare you so?”

Filming for the 2024 ‘Wicked’ movie took about a year. It started in December 2022 in England. The shoot paused in July 2023 because of the SAG-AFTRA strike. Filming resumed after the winter holidays and finished in January 2024.

Director Jon M. Chu decided to split ‘Wicked’ into two movies, so the cast and crew will do promotional interviews again next year. ‘Wicked’ is the origin story of the green-skinned woman who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West. It’s a prequel to ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ telling the story before Dorothy arrives and showing the friendship between Elphaba and Glinda.

“Both of us made the decision and have had the discussion about really being good to each other, making space for each other, being honest with each other and choosing to build our friendship,” Erivo previously told Deadline about her relationship with Grande.

She also talked about the director Jon M. Chu, “Everyone feels the love and the warmth and the respect. It’s an environment that allows for magic to happen. It starts at the top. Oh my God. It’s emotional, but I love him. We love him so much.”

The cast of the film includes Erivo, Grande, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, Bowen Yang, Bronwyn James, Keala Settle, Peter Dinklage, Aaron Teoh, Grecia de la Paz, Colin Michael Carmichael, Adam James, and Andy Nyman.

The movie tells the story of an unlikely friendship between Elphaba and Glinda, two witches in Oz. Elphaba is wrongly labeled as a wicked witch as she tries to expose the corrupt Wizard who rules Oz.

‘Wicked: Part One’ will be in theaters on November 22, and ‘Wicked: Part Two’ will come out on November 21, 2025.
