In a recent interview with IGN, James Gunn explained Peacemaker’s role in DC Universe.
“In ‘Creature Commandos,’ you’ll hear them talk about things that happened in [The] ‘Suicide Squad’ or ‘Peacemaker,'” the director said. “Well then, those things automatically become canon.”
He added, “The truth is almost all of ‘Peacemaker’ is canon with the exception of Justice League. Which we will kind of deal with in the next season of ‘Peacemaker.'”
The Justice League’s late arrival in ‘Peacemaker’s finale will need to be changed. It’s unclear how Gunn plans to do this, but recent set photos might give a clue.
A now-removed photo showed a mural with Peacemaker (in a new costume), his father in the White Dragon suit, and a third figure believed to be his late brother, Keith.
“‘Peacemaker’ explores the continuing story of the character that John Cena reprises in the aftermath of executive producer James Gunn’s 2021 film ‘The Suicide Squad’ – a compellingly vainglorious man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it,” the season 1 synopsis says.
Gunn confirmed in March on Threads that ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 would be part of the DCU canon. This was different from Season 1, which he said was not canon. He wrote, “Season one isn’t canon …”
When a fan asked why ‘Peacemaker’ Season 1 wasn’t canon despite its events happening in the DCU, Gunn replied, “Because all the events didn’t happen in the DCU. I mean, most do, but there are a few things outside the lines, so I can’t say it’s pure canon.”
Gunn also told fans that ‘Peacemaker’ and ‘Superman’ would be filmed at the same time. He said, “… To answer your follow-up questions: yes, we’ll be shooting ‘Superman’ & ‘Peacemaker’ simultaneously; yes, I’ve written all the episodes; but no, in the interest of getting the show out there, I won’t be able to direct them all (only some); & yes, ‘Waller’s still happening & Jeremy & Christal are hard at work writing great stuff, but the schedule was impacted by the strikes so it’ll come after ‘Peacemaker.'”
Gunn, Peter Safran, and Matt Miller are the executive producers of the show. John Cena is a co-executive producer, and Stacy Littlejohn is a consulting producer. ‘Peacemaker’ will be back for its second season next August.
