‘Wicked’ Earns Judy Garland’s Daughter’s Seal Of Approval Despite Past Controversy

Garland played Dorothy in the 1939 film ‘The Wizard of Oz.’

Despite past issues, Judy Garland’s daughter Lorna Luft supported ‘Wicked’ in a new Instagram post.

“Hello everyone, I just saw the New York screening of the movie ‘Wicked,’ and here is my review… This movie is astounding!” Luft wrote. “It’s epic, brilliant, touching and honest. It is breathtaking to look at … the sets, costumes, makeup, performances, choreography, and the entire scope of the movie, is everything I wanted it to be.”

She continued, “I told the genius Director Jon Chu, that he had picked up the torch, the broom, and the wand, and carried it forward; and thanked him, for adding to the family. Cynthia and Ariana are nothing short of magnificent!”

“They take you on an emotional roller coaster, and you better hold on tight. Vocally, they both are phenomenal and jaw-dropping! Their performances are honest, subtle, funny, and absolutely perfect. The rest of the cast including Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, and more, are also phenomenal!” Lorna added.

The actress concluded, “I sat at the talkback after the movie, and listened to all of them talk about what it was like to make this epic movie, which was a lot of fun, and done with a great deal of love and respect for the original. So all I can tell you, is go see it and be taken on the journey of the witches! And buckle up, because it’s one joy filled ride!”

Back in February, the first trailer for ‘Wicked’ caused mixed reactions. Viewers criticized its visuals, CGI, and special effects, calling them overly flashy. Some compared it to recent MCU films, while others felt the trailer looked too bland and lacked the original’s edge.

Later, in October, Cynthia Erivo shared a fan-edited poster that went viral on TikTok. The edited poster tried to copy the original Broadway musical’s iconic illustrated poster from the past 20 years.

She called these edits offensive and said they were degrading to both her and her co-star, Ariana Grande. Grande also responded to criticism of her voice in the film. She explained that transforming her voice was part of the role and criticized the double standards women face in the industry.
