Director Guillermo del Toro has confirmed that the ‘Frankenstein’ adaptation will premiere in theaters. Recently, a first look image from the upcoming movie was released and it was confirmed that it will be released on Netflix at some point in 2025. No exact release date has yet been set.
Del Toro took to BlueSky to comment on a post sharing the first-look image of Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi in ‘Frankenstein,’ commenting, “’Frankenstein’ will have a theatrical run…”
This marks del Toro’s second feature film for Netflix, following the critically acclaimed ‘Pinocchio’ (2022), which won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film.
The star-studded cast includes Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as the Monster, alongside Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, and others.
Netflix’s approach to theatrical releases has often sparked debate. However, Oscar eligibility requires films to play in theaters for at least one week, making a theatrical run for ‘Frankenstein’ a strategic move.
Del Toro has a strong track record at the Academy Awards. Beyond ‘Pinocchio,’ his 2017 drama ‘The Shape of Water’ won both Best Picture and Best Director. Additionally, ‘Nightmare Alley’ earned four nominations, including Best Picture.
