Although Jim Carrey movies rarely spawn sequels, one of the films that launched its own franchise was 1994’s ‘Dumb and Dumber.’ Directed by Peter Farrelly from a script he wrote with his brother Bobby and their collaborator Bennett Yellin, the movie starred Carrey and Jeff Daniels as two best friends with low IQs. It spawned a television adaptation and a prequel, though neither star reprised their roles until the 2014 legacy sequel ‘Dumb and Dumber’ to.
When discussing future projects, Bobby Farrelly said that they would “never rule out” a new movie in the ‘Dumb and Dumber’ franchise, potentially for the 40th anniversary in 2034, because “we have so much fun doing it and we can tackle it again.” Peter Farrelly added that this possibility had been raised before and that Carrey had suggested calling it ‘Gum and Gummier.’
Farelly said, “We could never rule out maybe doing another ‘Dumb and Dumber,’ and this year’s the 30th anniversary. Maybe at the 40th anniversary, just because we love Jim [Carrey] and Jeff [Daniels] so much. We have so much fun making those that we could revisit that, for sure.”
The Emmy-nominated performer Jim Carrey is best known for his roles in comedies, with his breakout performances coming in the mid-1990s in movies including ‘Ace Ventura: Pet Detective’ and ‘The Mask.’ Over the years, he has appeared in a variety of well-known comedies, such as ‘Liar Liar’ and ‘Bruce Almighty,’ as well as dramas such as ‘The Truman Show’ and ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.’ Cumulatively, his movies have grossed nearly $6 billion worldwide.
