James Gunn Explains How He Plans To Keep His DCU Fun For New Fans

Gunn might already be planning more DC projects for 2025.

James Gunn shared his strategy for keeping DCU fun for newcomers.

“I think it’s always going to be important that whatever the story we tell is that somebody can come into it, whether it’s ‘Superman,’ ‘Creature Commandos,’ ‘Peacemaker,'” the director said in a new interview when asked whether someone needs to know everything beforehand to watch the DC movies.

He continued, “You can come in, you can watch it, you can enjoy it. And if you’ve watched other things in the DCU, that’ll add color, that’ll be fun. But you have to be able to enjoy each individual episode or story by itself. And I think that’s incredibly important.”

Recently, Gunn also shared why DC Studios is different from Marvel. After working with Marvel for 10 years, he wants DC to take a new approach. Unlike Marvel, which often uses reshoots, Gunn has other plans.

He was also asked if DC would reveal projects like Marvel does. “It won’t be exactly like Marvel because nothing is greenlit before we have a finished script,” the director responded to the question.

Fans noticed DC announced many projects, even without full scripts, which raised questions about consistency. Gunn explained some projects are just ideas, not fully approved yet. While Warner Bros. likely wanted big reveals, Gunn wants to avoid past mistakes and do things differently.

Gunn confirmed that Deathstroke will be part of the DC Universe. While details about Batman’s role in the DCU are limited, Gunn’s response excites fans of the iconic villain. A fan on Threads asked him if there are plans for Slade Wilson in the DCU. He replied, “Yes and Yes.”

Deathstroke’s introduction is one of the biggest villain reveals in the DCU, after Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor in ‘Superman.’ If he appears in a movie, it will be his second time on screen, after a cameo in the 2017 ‘Justice League’ post-credits scene with Joe Manganiello.
