Oscar Nominee Turned Down ‘Wicked’ Glinda Audition: ‘Thank God It Wasn’t Me’

Despite her background in Broadway, the actress didn’t want to play the Good Witch of the South.

‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ star Stephanie Hsu explained her decision to turn down an audition to play Glinda in ‘Wicked’ during her appearance on ‘Watch What Happens Live’ on Monday.

The actress clarified, “I actually did not audition for Glinda. I was asked to audition, but I don’t feel in my heart to be a Glinda. And I actually just saw the movie and Ari is amazing. She’s giving like, Lucille Ball–level of comedic performance, so thank God it wasn’t me.”

Ariana Grande played Glinda the Good Witch in the new screen adaptation of the Broadway musical by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, while Cynthia Erivo took on the role of Elphaba the Wicked Witch.

The film, released on November 22, received mostly positive reviews so far. It broke box office record as the Broadway adaptation that had the largest opening, earning $46.6 million on its first day.

However, the promotional campaign for the movie caused some controversy online. Erivo specifically faced criticism for encouraging sing-alongs during theater screenings and calling out a fan-made poster inspired by the stage play’s artwork.

Additionally, a faulty web link printed on Mattel’s ‘Wicked’ doll boxes alarmed parents as it directed users to an adult website instead of the movie’s official page. The toy company is now facing a lawsuit over the error.
