Tyler Perry explained at the Los Angeles premiere of his new WWII epic, ‘The Six Triple Eight,’ why he won’t join Marvel or DC.
“You’ve got to have a passion for it. I’m not a big superhero person,” the actor revealed. “They’ve never been something that I enjoy.” He added, “My son enjoys them, so we watch them together.”
“I’ve had a couple conversations, but I would always say, ‘I’m not the guy to do this.’ I’m not the guy that can bring this vision to life cause it takes such a village to pull it together, and I’m not a guy that can work with fifty other directors and producers telling you what to do, how to do it when to do it,” Perry previously told Screen Rant when asked whether Marvel or DC ever asked him to do superhero movies.
He also noted, “That doesn’t work for me. I saw that in a couple of the sci-fi movies that I’ve been apart of and I think, ‘Uhh, I’m not doing that.'”
Perry has made many movies, TV shows, and stage plays over the years. His new film, ‘The Six Triple Eight,’ is his biggest project so far. The Netflix movie stars Kerry Washington and includes a cameo by Oprah Winfrey. It tells the story of an all-Black female U.S. Army unit in WWII.
The actor also said he is working on a Christmas movie featuring gospel music. However, he is unsure about his future in filmmaking after finishing his 2022 passion project, ‘A Jazzman’s Blues.’
‘The Six Triple Eight’ starts with the true love story of Lena, a Black high school senior, and Abram, her Jewish boyfriend. Abram proposes before going to war but dies in combat. After his death, Lena joins the 6888 unit.
