When DC Studios revealed its intro during the summer, many thought the featured character might change depending on the project. But James Gunn recently confirmed that Superman will remain the main focus.
A fan on Bluesky asked Gunn (per ComicBook), “I was surprised to see the Superman DC ID at the start. Will all DC stuff use the Superman ID, or will the character featured change based on [the] project?” He replied, “He’s our MGM lion. It will usually be him.”
This aligns with discussions about Superman being the centerpiece of the new DC Universe. Upcoming stories are expected to revolve around him, with the director promising to show a new side of the hero on screen.
Talking about their approach in 2025’s ‘Superman,’ Gunn recently told the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, “I don’t think we’ve ever seen the big science fiction Silver Age Superman aspects that we have in our movie. We’ve never seen…you’ll see when the movie comes out, but we’ve never seen this specific part of Superman’s life.”
“I don’t think we’ve ever seen the Lex that [Nicolas Hoult] is. Nic is imposing. You go, ‘Oh, f*ck, poor Superman.’ That’s the thing we never see, not in film. Sometimes in the comics you go, ‘Oh, Superman is f*cked because Lex is so smart and so good at what he’s doing’ but in the movies, you’re going, ‘Lex is about to get f*cked.’ We’ve got a big old Superman and a pretty tall Lex too. You see now where Lex is, he’s not the person you want to have against you.”
‘Superman’ will explore the DC hero’s struggle to balance his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing though it reportedly won’t be an origin story. After completing some additional shots, the movie is set to release on July 11, 2025.
