The 82nd Golden Globes nominations went public on Monday. ‘Emilia Pérez’ seems to lead the film categories with 10 nominations while ‘The Bear’ tops TV recognitions with 5, followed by ‘Shōgun’ and ‘Only Murders in the Building.’
Some popular 2024 titles are missing from the nominee list, though. Among them is last summer’s blockbuster, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, which did not receive any nominations.
This exclusion is unexpected, especially since the Marvel film received a lot of positive reviews and buzz. It was thought Reynolds would be in Best Screenplay category, which instead featured ‘Emilia Pérez,’ ‘Anora,’ ‘The Substance,’ ‘A Real Pain,’ ‘The Brutalist,’ and ‘Conclave.’
Directorial snubs included Jon M. Chu for ‘Wicked,’ despite its ongoing box office success, and Denis Villeneuve for ‘Dune: Part Two,’ who had previously been recognized in the 2022 ceremony for ‘Dune.’ Villeneuve’s sequel received nominations only for Best Picture and Best Original Score.
In the acting categories, Danielle Deadwyler was overlooked for Best Supporting Actress in ‘The Piano Lesson,’ as were Marianne Jean-Baptiste for Best Actress in ‘Hard Truths,’ and Saoirse Ronan for both lead and supporting roles in ‘The Outrun’ and ‘Blitz.’ Jean-Baptiste was earlier named best actress by the New York Film Critics Circle.
The list featured some surprises, as well. ‘The Apprentice’ earned nominations for Sebastian Stan as Donald Trump and Jeremy Strong as Trump’s lawyer, Roy Cohn, despite the film’s controversial reception. The now-President-elect’s team even threatened a lawsuit against the project before the 2024 elections.
‘The Substance’ also unexpectedly appeared in several major categories: Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Picture-Musical or Comedy, and Best Supporting Actress for Margaret Qualley, although Demi Moore was widely expected to be nominated for her lead role.
In television, Diego Luna received a surprising nod for ‘La Máquina,’ while Tyler James Williams for ‘Abbott Elementary’ and Peter Sarsgaard for ‘Presumed Innocent’ were missing from the acting categories.
Meanwhile, ‘Only Murders in the Building’ saw recognition for Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez, but not for Meryl Streep.
Shows such as Netflix’s ‘The Perfect Couple,’ Apple TV+’s ‘Palm Royale,’ ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm,’ ‘Reservation Dogs,’ and Prime Video’s ‘Fallout’ were all left off the nominations list although each were praised by the critics and audiences.
The 2025 Golden Globes will find their owners on January 5. Comedian Nikki Glaser will host the event that will be streamed on Paramount+. .
