Harrison Ford spoke to Empire via Zoom for the special worldwide issue of ‘Captain America: Brave New World.’
Over a career spanning nearly five decades, he has brought to life some of the most iconic characters in film history, including Han Solo and Indiana Jones.
When asked about replacing William Hurt in the role of Thunderbolt Ross in Marvel’s story, Ford said, “I was a little concerned about taking over from Bill Hurt, who was a wonderful actor.” He added,“I was ambitious to find the right way of assuming this character after the audience had seen other people doing it. I’m only slightly familiar with the Marvel Universe — I live in another universe — but I have watched a number of Marvel films with wonderful actors, apparently having a good time. And I thought, ‘Well, why not me?’”
Director Julius Onah described Ford’s work in the film as “mind-blowing”. “All of us on set were like, ‘Holy fucking shit, he nailed it,’” said Onah. “It’s really great to get back to a Hulk that is just fucking breaking shit, and a rage monster.”
Ford said, “I tried to understand the ambition of the filmmakers, and to be useful to them,” “I just didn’t sit home at night and say, ‘Oh, what do I want to do when I turn into the Hulk?’ It didn’t seem to me to be a terribly difficult acting proposition.”
Ford previously told in an interview with Variety that the only reason he agreed to join the MCU was because he needed the money, adding that he took the job because he was ‘an idiot for money’:
“What did it take? It took not caring. It took being an idiot for money, which I’ve done before.”
Ford has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thunderbolt Ross. He will play Ross in ‘Captain America: Brave New World’, which will be released in 2025. His character will transform into the Red Hulk in the movie.
