The identity of Anakin Skywalker’s father has been a topic of discussion for years among ‘Star Wars’ fans as it was a vague point in George Lucas’ original films.
A scene in 1999’s ‘The Phantom Menace’ showed Anakin’s mother, Shmi, reveal, “There was no father. I carried him, I gave birth, I raised him, I can’t explain what happened.” But apparently, there was a hand involved in his existence (via Gaming Bible).
Writer Charles Soule and artist Giuseppe Camuncoli’s ‘Darth Vader #25’ confirmed in 2018 that Palpatine was actually the father.
A long-standing theory was that Palpatine found Shmi and manipulated her gestating fetus to be the chosen one for the dark side. The comic book issue made this official in a vision through Darth Vader’s memory as The Emperor used the Force on Shmi’s pregnant belly.
While the comic book story cleared a point about Darth Vader’s history, it also didn’t sit well with some fans, who believed The Force creating Anakin would be a better explanation as it implied his creation was bigger than the galaxy.
With Soule himself casting doubt over the authenticity of the story in the past by saying “The Dark Side is not a reliable narrator,” there’s a chance for the canon to change. New ‘Star Wars’ projects are still in the works, playing around with new ideas and plotlines about the universe.
In addition to Jon Favreau’s ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu,’ Lucasfilm is currently working on a new trilogy for the franchise, one of which will feature Dave Filoni as a director. Filoni is also developing a second season for the ‘Ahsoka’ series.
Meanwhile, Disney+ is airing ‘Skeleton Crew.’ Jude Law, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, and Ryan Kiera Armstrong star in the show, following four children trying to make their way home after being lost in the galaxy following a discovery they made on their home planet.
