Ryan Reynolds sat down with Andrew Garfield for a chat on Variety’s Actors on Actors program and revealed the Disney character he was not allowed to use in ‘Deadpool 3.’
Reynolds admitted that Kevin Feige has always been incredibly supportive of the project, but when he pitched ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ as a story inspired by the 1950 film ‘Rashomon’ (told from three different points of view) and didn’t get the green light, he decided to pitch “the dumbest movies” instead. One of these ideas led to a Bambi reference. “And then I pitched one where it’s a two-hander with me and the hunter who shot Bambi’s mom. Their answer was ‘We don’t touch Bambi, Ryan’,” he shared.
Apart from that, in interviews with Reynolds and Shawn Levy over a long period of time, they also mentioned a single line in the script that had to be cut, and they both joked that they would take it to their graves.
While Reynolds vowed not to repeat the line, the ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ script circulated online after Disney’s FYC portal published it, and people finally saw what happened.
While ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ didn’t even have a title yet, it was unclear what the budget would be, so everything about the plot was still up in the air. Reynolds and Levy explored a wide range of ideas that were constantly changing in terms of costs. Also, the concept of having a large number of characters wasn’t even on the table at first, which shows that over a long period of time, they adapted as they came to terms with the possibilities and limitations. That’s when even Mephisto started to be considered as the big villain of the story.
The movie broke box office records. It earned a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and even got NSYNC back on the Billboard charts. One of the highlights of the movie was its criticism of the current state of MCU projects that had received approval from Feige.
