In a new interview on CBS This Morning, Keanu Reeves said he would love to play ‘John Wick’ again, but his knees are holding him back. The actor turned 60 this year and now says the physical burden of the action franchise is too much for him.
“You can never say never, but my knees right now are saying, ‘You can’t do another John Wick.’ So, my heart does, but I don’t know if my knees can do it,” Reeves said.
Reeves appeared on a talk show with ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3′ director Jeff Fowler to promote the film, which hits theaters next Friday. Fowler joked that Reeves’ knees give him no excuse not to watch the upcoming ‘Sonic’ movies, since he only has to do voiceover work to portray Shadow the Hedgehog. He said: “You heard it here first: Keanu will be playing Shadow for the next 20 years.”
Reeves plays a retired assassin grappling with grief in ‘John Wick,’ released in 2014. Reeves has reprised the role in three more films. The most recent, ‘John Wick: Chapter 4,’ was released in 2023.
He is also starring in ‘The Continental: From the World of John Wick,’ a TV spinoff that premiered as a mini-series. The first spinoff movie will be released next year. ‘From the World of John Wick: Ballerina’ comes to theaters on June 6, 2024.
‘John Wick: Chapter 5’ has been in production since 2020. It was originally planned to be shot back-to-back with Chapter 4. After the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2023 Hollywood labor strikes, the movie seems to have undergone some major changes. In October, director Chad Stahelski told The Hollywood Reporter that Chapter 5 would start a new story instead of directly following Chapter 4. He also noted that Reeves would provide creative input to the story.
At least two more spin-off movies and a TV series are in development for the John Wick franchise. Currently, the first three John Wick movies can be seen on fuboTV, and Chapter 4 is available on Starz. The Continental is airing on Peacock.
