‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ is about to make a comeback, and we may finally learn more about Freddy Krueger’s past.
There hasn’t been a new film in the series for over ten years, but during a recent interview with ComicBook, Englund shared an interesting idea for a new movie. He suggested that a possible prequel could show more of Freddy’s life before he became the terrifying figure we know.
“I would almost like to see a prequel to ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ where we see Freddy go to jail, go to court, courtroom drama,” he said. “He gets off, and the lawyers could be really interesting, characters could be real sleazy. … And you get some good character actors to play the lawyers.”
Englund imagined a story showing what a twisted person Freddy was. “Freddy gets off, he gloats on the courthouse steps,” he imagined. “He’s not Freddy yet, he’s not burned yet, and whoever that person is, we get more insight into him and his wife and child and what a twisted soul he is. And make it a little retro. Set it maybe late ’70s or mid-’70s in a suburban world where there’s a sleazy disco down at the corner or something. I could see that happening.”
Englund also talked about how Freddy may struggle to be as scary in today’s world of social media and smartphones. He joked that Freddy could try using technology, but he and Langenkamp agreed that people might make fun of him too quickly for Freddy to have the same effect he did in the past.
The horror franchise turns 40 this year, as its first film debuted in 1984. The original ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ will be re-released digitally on October 1, 2024, and on 4K Ultra HD on October 15, 2024 to celebrate the 40th anniversary.
