In a recent conversation with ComicBook.com, Harvey Guillén, the voice behind Gabo in Disney’s latest animated movie ‘Wish,’ shared his insights on the current state of diversity and representation in Disney films, saying a queer Disney princess would be a fantastic fit for the studio’s upcoming projects.
Known for his role in ‘What We Do in the Shadows,’ the actor expressed his hopes for the future of a queer Disney princess. Praising Disney for its efforts in moving towards more inclusive character portrayals, he said:
“I think they’re making strides in the right direction. I think it’s hard to rebuild a wheel that’s already been in motion for a while, and it’s hard to think of a new direction, especially in where we’re at with the world, but they’re putting their best foot forward, I think. And sometimes, those things take time, and I’m optimistic. And like you said, if a queer princess comes along, that’d be fantastic.”
He Believes We Can See a Queer Princess Soon
Guillén then touched upon the progress already made in film representation and voiced his optimism for the potential introduction of such a character. According to the actor, this might actually happen in our lifetime:
“I think that we are in the lifespan of that potentially happening. And that could be a reality. It’s just like I said; it takes time with stuff like that. Representation has taken so long just in film in general with every studio and every company. And so it’s taken us this far to come this far, but look how far we’ve gotten.”
Recalling the time he was recording for ‘Wish,’ Guillén said working with Disney was initially intimidating but ultimately rewarding. The environment, he noted, was welcoming, allowing him the freedom to define Gabo’s character, including opportunities to personalize his performance.
‘Wish’ is available for rental or purchase from digital retailers, and its 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD release is scheduled for March 12, 2024.
