Aaron Sorkin: ‘January 6 Riot Makes Me Want A ‘Social Network’ Sequel’

He is planning a sequel because he feels Facebook had a role in the U.S. Capitol riot on January 6.

Aaron Sorkin is thinking about making a sequel to ‘The Social Network’ because Facebook played a big part in the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

During a live episode of ‘The Town’ podcast, Sorkin said he’s working on a new movie that looks like a follow-up to ‘The Social Network.’ He explained it’s not exactly a direct sequel but more like a new story:

“Look, yeah, I’ll be writing about this. I blame Facebook for January 6. You’re going to need to buy a movie ticket.”

He Has Another Reason To Criticize Facebook

Sorkin added that he thinks Facebook is focusing on making more money by showing users posts that make them argue:

“I’m trying [to write a movie about it]. Facebook has been, among other things, tuning its algorithm to promote the most divisive material possible. Because that is what will increase engagement. That is what will get you to — what they call inside the hallways of Facebook — ‘the infinite scroll’ … There’s supposed to be a constant tension at Facebook between growth and integrity. There isn’t. It’s just growth.”

Sorkin points out that if Mark Zuckerberg cared less about making so much money, he could make Facebook a better place.

This Isn’t A New Plan For Sorkin

2010’s ‘The Social Network’ told the story of how Facebook was created. Sorkin first talked about making a sequel a year after the film’s release:

“I don’t want to make news here. I think what has been going on with Facebook these last few years is a story very much worth telling, and there is a way to tell it as a follow-up to ‘The Social Network,’ and that’s as much as I know.”

David Fincher said making another movie about Facebook would be tricky, but Eisenberg is excited about playing Zuckerberg again.
