British actress, screenwriter, and director, Michaela Coel revealed during an interview with Vulture that she had cried over and over again while writing the series ‘I May Destroy You’ that fictionalizes the story of her sexual assault.
The 32-year-old actress depicted the times she had created the script as follows:
“I open myself up as a vessel for the story to come through.”
Then, Coel continued:
“I go up into a mountain, and I come back with 12 containers of vomit and these are the episodes. My team acts as if it’s a great takeaway, like, ‘Wow, this food is really interesting! What are these aromas? What’s here?’ ”
The actress also said that she had written 191 drafts of the series, and she had released herself during this process.
The series captivated audiences with its frank manner of telling a highly dramatic story. Michaela represented the main character Arabella, and she expressed that the character is based on her own life story. So, she had had a chance to face oneself, and her experiences.
The series ended on July 14, however, it is available on BBC One and HBO.
