Alyson Hannigan revealed she refused to have a sequel clause in her contract for ‘American Pie.’
The actress recently sat down with Vulture for an interview and explained that the movie had different pay tiers, with her and Seann William Scott being on the lowest one, called the C-tier. In this tier, there was no bargaining because the characters were seen as less significant. She talked about her response:
“I was like, ‘Okay, fine.’ It was seven days and it was more of a passion project. Then, in the contract, there was a sequel clause. I said, ‘Look, I’m getting paid scale plus 10. I’m not going to sign for a sequel. That doesn’t make sense.’ I sound like I was being really difficult, but I just thought it was silly. So they took that [clause] out, which ended up being really nice for me when I did the sequel. There were a couple smart things I did back then.”
During the SAG-AFTRA strike last year, Scott, who played Steve Stifler, revealed he only earned $8,000 for his role in the first ‘American Pie’ movie, despite its huge box office success. The film starred Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas, and Eddie Kaye Thomas as high school friends. Hannigan played Michelle, reprising her role in several sequels.
Alyson’s Words On ‘American Reunion’
Alyson previously talked about returning as Michelle in the ‘American Pie’ sequel, ‘American Reunion’:
“You know, I haven’t seen most of those guys for, goodness, we couldn’t even figure it out — probably, like, eight years or something. And more for the ladies. It’s a little strange because you’ve kept up with them in the media. Like, everybody knew I had a kid. But it was really nice. We got to show pictures! It was one of those the things where the dynamic with everyone is as if no time that has passed. You instantly get along.”
More than six years after the original ‘American Pie,’ the franchise continued with direct-to-video spin-offs. These include ‘Band Camp,’ ‘The Naked Mile,’ ‘Beta House,’ ‘The Book of Love,’ and ‘Girls’ Rules.’ All five spin-offs focus on relatives of Steve Stifler, such as his brother Matt and his cousins Erik, Dwight, Scott, and Stephanie Stifler.
