Anne Hathaway has a rather surprising story from early in her career.
In a recent interview with V Magazine, Hathaway recalled an audition in the 2000s where she had to kiss 10 different men. This was part of a ‘chemistry test’ to see how well she could work with a potential co-star in a movie:
“Back in the 2000s — and this did happen to me — it was considered normal to ask an actor to make out with other actors to test for chemistry. Which is actually the worst way to do it. I was told, ‘We have ten guys coming today and you’re cast. Aren’t you excited to make out with all of them?’ And I thought, ‘Is there something wrong with me?’ because I wasn’t excited. I thought it sounded gross.”
Hathaway said she went along with the audition because she didn’t want to be seen as difficult to work with. She wasn’t forced to do anything but felt that this was not the best way to test if actors would work well together.
She Did A Different Thing In ‘The Idea Of You’
Hathaway decided to change how chemistry tests are done when she started producing ‘The Idea Of You.’ She had actors choose a song they thought their character would like instead of kissing:
“We asked each of the actors coming in to choose a song that they felt their character would love, that they would put on to get my character to dance, and then we’d do a short little improv. I was sitting in a chair like we had come in from dinner or a walk or something, we pressed play, and we just started dancing together.”
‘The Idea Of You’ is a romantic comedy that will be available on Amazon Prime on May 2nd.
